About Philip Brill
I grew up in Maitland, Florida. From a young age, my initial desires
were to become a pilot, and a racecar driver. I loved planes, cars, actually,
anything mechanical. After graduating from high school, I went to University
of Florida. In pursuit of my childhood goal of becoming a pilot, I joined
the Navy ROTC, and as soon as I received my B.S. degree in 1986, I entered
Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Florida. I was awarded my wings in 1987.
During my 11 years in the Navy, I flew the Anti-Submarine and Special
Warfare variants of the Sikorsky H-60 Helicopter.
In 1995, I began my pursuit of becoming a racecar driver by attending
a 3-day road racing school at Road Atlanta. I found driving the Nissan
300Z around the "old" Road Atlanta course to be very challenging
and very exciting. I caught the "racing bug". In 1999, I joined
the SCCA and began working as a Flagman/Corner Worker. I felt it was important
to see what the "on track" competition was like from their point
of view. While I was working as a Race Official, I took the opportunity
to research the different SCCA classes, and speak to the drivers. I made
my decision in 2000 to join the Spec RX-7 class. The Spec RX-7 class consistently
had 35 to 50 cars entered for each race. My choice to join this class
was based on the fact that Spec RX-7 was a very competitive group made
up of very good, friendly drivers; all driving similarly (Spec) prepared
1981-1985 RX-7s. I purchased my RX-7 in 2000 and attended the October
2000 and March 2001 Driver's Schools at Summit Point, West Virginia.
I am currently in my third year of racing and am having a great time
as I work my way to the front of the field.
